- Think about the pedagogical reasons for choosing HELIX Classroom/Hyflex as your format.
- Here are some resources to help you understand what a HELIX/Hyflex Classroom is:
- Make an appointment for a course format consultation if you’re not sure.
Start Drafting Your Syllabus
(Due 5-12 weeks before the semester begins)
- Depending on the semester, your syllabus will need to be posted on your Canvas course site about 5-12 weeks before the semester begins. It will be visible to anyone in the world who clicks on it from the course catalog.
- Start planning the learning activities, assignments and assessments that will help your students participating via all formats to achieve the learning goals you want them to reach.
- Make an appointment with a member of the Course Design Team for help.
Decide if you will have sections and how they will be run
(5-12 weeks before the semester begins)
- Try to make times available for students in different time zones.
Start working on your Canvas site
( 8-12 weeks before the semester begins)
- The time when faculty can access their Canvas sites differs according to the semester.
- Get help with your Canvas site and other course tools.
Meet with a member of the production team
(about 9-12 weeks before the semester begins)
- You will be contacted by a producer.
- Discuss how your class recordings will be made available to your students and other technical aspects of your course.
- Inform them of dates for special events such as exams, guest speakers, student presentations, etc..
Hire TA(s)
(as soon as possible)
- Start thinking about who you would like to hire, but don’t promise anyone they will be hired until it is approved by the administration.
- After they’re hired, they can start working on the course Canvas site.
- Discuss how they will run section meetings.
- Have them run section meetings.
- Discuss what their role will be during class and their other duties.
Computer
(about 4 weeks before the start of the semester--in case you need to buy new equipment)
- If you will be using your own computer to teach, make sure it meets technical requirements and has the most recent version of Zoom.
Meet with Teaching and Learning Pedagogy and Audio Visual Teams
(2-3 weeks before the start of the semester)
- See what it will feel like to teach in a HELIX/Hyflex Classroom.
- Discuss the pedagogical and technical aspects of conducting a HELIX Classroom/Hyflex course.
- Do a dry run of your class.
Start to get to know your students
(1 week before the first class)
- Create a survey in Canvas so they can tell you:
- Why they are taking the course
- Their academic and work background
- How to pronounce their names
- Anything else you’d like to know
- Create a discussion board so students can share information about themselves with each other.
Get ready for for the first day of class
(1 week before your class)
- Go through your Canvas site to make sure it’s ready for the first class meeting:
- Students have access to all materials they will need
- Assignments have been created so students can turn in their work
- Discussion boards have been created if you’ll be using them
- Review activities and assignments to be sure they include all of your students:
- Asynchronous students watching the recording of the class
- Synchronous students attending via Zoom
- Students in the classroom with you
- Have a Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C, just in case something doesn’t go as you anticipated.
