Justin's tips for doc creating

How I start a doc depends on the source:

  • Doc360 port: I can usually copy over text and images fine. At the very least, I copy the text and then insert the photos one by one. Copy/pasting can cause formatting issues that are sometimes easier to avoid than fix
  • PDF port: Transcribe the text in SublimeText or a similar program and then transfer that to KO. Any screenshots I try to label and organize so I can find them easily when importing as longer docs can get complicated

KO is friendly enough that I do most of the basics outside of code view. I generally wait until all of the text and images are in the doc before I begin creating divs, lists, links. Then I use code view to clean up any wonky formatting (I am just getting my feet wet with HTML, so this may not apply to you!).

Some other points to remember:

  • We have been labeling images as "decorative" as alt text placeholders for images that don't need alt text.
  • H tag sizes scale so that H3 is smaller than Paragraph size - this can be adjusted via code view
  • I use the color coded divs for:
    • Grey: sub section breaks and opening navigation links
    • Blue: new section headings
    • Yellow: callouts and notes
