View a Course as a Test Student Using Student View

  • Student View lets you experience your course the way that your students do.
  • You will see only what you, as the instructor, allow your students to see.

Notes:

  • Each Canvas course has a separate Test Student account. Whenever you move to a new course you will need to enable Student View for that course.
  • Submissions and scores for the Test Student do not affect course analytics.
  • New Quizzes assessments should be previewed in New Quizzes and not taken as the test student. Test Student attempts cannot be reset and will affect analysis reports.

Step 1.

  • Open Student View
    • You can access Student View from most areas of your course page
    • Click the "Student View" button at the top right of the page.

Step 2.

  • View Course
    • You can now view the course as a student user would see it.
      • Students cannot see some links like instructors can.
    • The pink box on the bottom of the screen indicates you are logged into Student View.

Step 3.

  • Reset Student
    • Clicking "Reset Student" will clear all activity that does not include any student interaction.
    • For example, clicking the "Reset Student" button allows you another submission attempt for assignments as the Test Student.
