Immersive Classroom Instructor Dashboard

No one likes to speak into a void. We've seen that students only keep using the IC when they know their comments have been seen. The good news is, you don't need to respond to or grade every single student. Instead just bring the async students into the class conversation.

Close the Loop

Rather than responding to students as they post, we recommend reviewing all comments about 20 minutes before you next class meeting and choosing a few to highlight in class by using the Instructor Dashboard.

Using the Instructor Dash

1. Head to last week's course video by following the "Course Recordings" link in the left hand navigation in Canvas.

2. Open your course video and select "Instructor Dash."

3. Choose "View and Pin Content" to quickly review any comments made on last week's video (your TA can do this for you if you prefer).

View and Pin Content

4. This will show you all of the comments made in your class last week. Pick out a few that you would like to highlight and "pin" them. Anything you pin will be added to a carousel that you can share in your next live class.

5. At the start of the next class, head back to the Instructor Dashboard and select "Present Pins."

Present Pinned Content

6. This will generate a carousel of the pinned comments. Share your screen and talk about the comments with your live class.

Comments are set to autoplay. You can pause this and use the forward/back arrows if you choose.

Remember, the most important part of all of this is making sure that your async students feel like they are full members of your course community. So refer to them by name when you share their work and take a minute to answer a few questions or highlight a few posts.

Then remind  your async students to participate again this week, so you'll have more comments to pin next week.
