
TA Roles and Expectations: The Instructor's Perspective
Purpose: This resource guides instructors in effectively supervising and collaborating with TAs by clarifying responsibilities, defining shared expectations, and promoting strong communication that supports student learning and course operations.

Typical TA Responsibilities
Answer students’ questions via discussion boards, email, or during class
Support students who need help
Be a liaison between you and the students
Some students may be hesitant to approach you
TAs can alert you about students who are having difficulty
Grade student work
Manage and monitor discussion boards
Manage and organize the Canvas course website
Create assignments
Manage Modules
Publish materials
Upload files
Send announcements
Make sure materials meet accessibility requirements
Attend class
If online, manage breakout rooms, chat and routine tech tasks
Run section meetings
Occasionally hold a special section to demonstrate a tool needed for the course or explain a difficult concept
Hold office hours
Assist with exams and projects
Hold extra sections or office hours to prepare
Be on call if students experience tech difficulties or have questions
Advise students about resources
Discuss Expectations with Your TA
Number of hours they will work each week
The amount of time that should be devoted to each responsibility
If more time be needed at the start of the semester, mid-term or at the end
If you have a team of TAs, assign one as the head TA and make sure all understand their roles and responsibilities
Additional responsibilities they may have at different times during the semester
Grading
Discuss if you will you grade together or if the TA grades first and you review
How the workload will be divided
Make sure the TAs understand your grading standards and policies
If you want to decide topics to be discussed during section, or if you want them to do it
How often you will meet
