How Simple Syllabus Impacts your Canvas Course Site

All January and Spring 2023 Extension School courses (except cross-listed Harvard College courses) are required to use Simple Syllabus as the platform for their syllabi.

There are several things to be aware of during Extension and Summer Schools' transition to Simple Syllabus.

Syllabus page

  • Simple Syllabus is replacing the use of the Canvas Syllabus page.

  • Your Canvas course site does not need to be published in order for students to access your syllabus.
    • If your Simple Syllabus Course Syllabus is approved and published, the syllabus will be visible via a link in the catalog before they register.
    • If the course is published, students will also see it on Canvas after they register.

  • Access the Simple Syllabus tool on your Canvas Site by clicking on Course Syllabus.

  • By default on newly created course site, Course Syllabus displays at the top of the in the left-hand course navigation menu.

Request a Canvas site course copy. Let ITG do the work for you!

  • If you are copying over content from a prior term,  confirm Course Syllabus is enabled on the course navigation menu. If not, modify the course navigation menu by enabling Course Syllabus and disabling the Syllabus page.

If you elect to copy on your own, please run through the checklist and note all the exceptions listed on our website every term before going forward to avoid errors.

Home page

  • Your students now see the Course activity stream as your Canvas home page.
    • Do not select "Syllabus" as your home page. It will not direct students to the Simple Syllabus Course Syllabus.
