Learning assessments, both graded and ungraded, in the form of high stakes exams, low stake quizzes, practice tests and course level surveys can be administered right in your Canvas course site using the Canvas Quizzes tool.
Secure, online, proctored exams
Security on high stakes exams is of particular interest at Harvard DCE. In order to provide instructors with an easy option for providing proctored assessments at a distance, we have partnered with Proctorio. For more information about Proctorio, please visit our Proctorio resources listing.
Proctorio is an optional, digital proctoring solution for online exams that can only be used in conjunction with the built-in Canvas Quizzes tool. Proctorio will help to ensure the integrity of your exams, while providing a convenient exam option for students.

Question types
A variety of question types for both auto-graded and manually graded questions are available in Canvas Quizzes, including:
- essay, text and media entry
- multiple choice, true/false
- multiple answer
- fill-in-the-blank(s)
- drop-down(s), Likert scale
- matching
- numerical answer
- formula
- direct file upload
Administrative management
Basic administrative options in the Canvas Quizzes tool allow you to set access controls and student experience, including:
- differentiated due and availability dates
- time limits
- pre-set and emergency time accommodations
- multiple attempts with scoring options
- answer shuffling for auto graded questions
- response viewing after submission
- single page layout or one question at-a-time
