Course Design Spotlights highlight innovative projects that members of the Teaching and Learning team work on with DCE faculty through the Teach Partnership program. Emmy Waldman's ENGL E-184 The Graphic Novel partnership resulted in many custom illustrations, several of which are showcased below. For more information about this partnership, visit Design Gallery Spotlight: Thematic Course Illustration.
Custom Illustrations
This illustration was created as a cover page for the redesigned course syllabus. In initial drafts and sketches of Emmy's avatar (below), the designers played with the idea of "reading oneself into being" or "drawing oneself into existence"—a visual representation of the way in which art and texts derive meaning from the audience's engagement with them. This comic strip, titled "Anything Can Happen in a Comic", plays with themes of time, space, visual narrative, and the meta-cognitive aspect of authorial identity in art. The sequential art and shifting color scheme indicate the passage of time, which is shaken up as the traditional panel flow is broken and Emmy's avatar realizes that she is in a comic and must communicate with her future self.
