Organize assignments and set assignment weights for final grade calculations.
- This option assigns a weight to each assignment group, not the assignments themselves.
- Important- you must enter in "0 points" for any missing student submission in order for the final grade calculations to be correct. If the missing assignment submission is not zeroed out, Canvas treats it as if the student was excused from the assignment.
Creating Assignment Groups
Step 1.
- Navigate to Assignments on the course navigation menu.
Step 2.
- Select the "+Group" button.
Step 3.
- Name the assignment group and click save. It will appear as a header in the Assignments area.
Step 4.
- Designate new assignments or move already created assignments to the appropriate group.
Allocate new assignments with the "Assignment Group" drop-down menu.
Move an already created assignment by clicking the dotted drag handle left of the individual assignment name. Drop the assignment in the desired group by releasing the mouse.
Step 5.
- Click the three dots to the right of "+Assignment" and select the Assignment Groups Weights option.
Step 6.
- Click the "Weight final grade based on assignment groups" checkbox.
Step 7.
- Enter the percentage weights for each of the different Assignment Groups you created.
Step 8.
- Click the Save button.
Step 9.
- The weights will show up in the Gradebook for both students and instructors.
Note: On the Syllabus Page, confirm the Total equals 100%.
